March: of the Aliens is the eleventh album by Moes Haven and the third of twelve from the 365 Project, released on April 3, 2006. It is the second of six albums from the project to be released after the end of its respective month.
The album was recorded during a snowy night during the winter of 2006, with Matt Farley unable to remember if the exact month was February or March. In the Motern Media No-Jokes Album Guide, Farley says: “The windows were closed. The lights were dim because the snow was reflecting the streetlights back into my apartment. It set a perfect vibe for a recording session that went into the night.”
The environment led to the duo recording longer songs, which in turn led to fewer tracks making it to March: Of The Aliens. It is in part a concept album. Tracks 1 through 4 consist of a regular collection of songs. Tracks 5 through 9 – “Alien Lullaby”, “The Aliens Are in Sacramento”, “Break It”, “Elegy For a Space Commander”, and “The Aliens Spare Earth (For Now)” are a sequence about an alien invasion. This stemmed from the duo coming up with the title for the record, which came about due to their love for puns.
The album also continues the Creepy Bobby lore from February: From the Bayou to the Barnyard and Back: “I Like Her Ambition” is sung from Creepy Bobby’s perspective. Tom Scalzo is not featured on “Unrequited Love is So Good For Your Diet”.
Dan Speake features on the cover art, calling nobody on a payphone. Dan Speake was a coworker of Matt and has appeared in some of his movies. Speake has also featured on other Moes Haven albums.
“Rattletrap” was performed at the first Motern Extravaganza, and has appeared on multiple live albums. “The Aliens Spare Earth (For Now)” was performed at the 2018 Extravaganza, and also appears on other live albums.
By March 2016, 10 years later, the album had only made $38.
Between Farley, other members of the Motern Media universe, and fans, March: of the Aliens is often considered one of the best Moes Haven albums, along with Out With the Old and December.
The songs “Rattletrap” and “The Aliens Spare Earth (For Now)” appear on the band’s 2007 compilation Victory Is Ours! (For Now). “Rattletrap” was inspired by a comic by Jerry Smith titled RATTLETRAP, about married life and life being an artist. “The Aliens Spare Earth (For Now)” borrows its refrain from “Fishin’ With Dad”, the ninth track on February: From the Bayou to the Barnyard and Back; the refrain would go on to appear in “Dig In!”, the first track on December and a regular fan favorite.
