Dislocated Songs is the second widely-released album by Moes Haven, released on November 3, 2004. It consists of the duo’s more comedic material, which was left off of their first release, Out With the Old. Because it contains so much material, its runtime and track list dwarfs its predecessor, with 35 tracks totaling 1 hour and 19 minutes.
Background
By 2004, Matt Farley and Tom Scalzo had recorded over 40 hours of music together as Moes Haven, and were beginning to release their songs to streaming services via CD Baby. While the band’s first album Out With the Old had more serious songs, Matt compiled Moes Haven’s more silly songs on this second album.
Much of the content on Dislocated Songs stems from some of Farley’s and his friends’ earliest works, including songs written with other collaborators for parallel projects. Doug “Froggy” Brennan, a childhood friend of Farley’s, features as a vocalist on “Chokin’ The Chicken”, and “Shut Up Your Monkey” includes a rhyme that Farley and Brennan wrote in fourth grade. Farley finally recorded the latter with Chris “Pete” Peterson in 2001 as the Finklestinks. “I Want To Feed You”, another Finklestinks song, also features on the album.
“Ya Ya Ooh!” reflects Farley’s attempt to make a phrase that would rival other backing vocal phrases such as “la la la”. “Missed Opportunities (I don’t need your internship, Jimmy Kimmel)” was based on Farley turning down an opportunity offered by a priest at Providence College to intern for Kimmel.
“Papaphobia” was written during a four-hour recording session with Scalzo during the last week of college which produced a 90-minute album. The lyrics of “I Love Hugh Grant” include made-up facts about Grant.
In 2015, Matt said this is the best-selling Moes Haven album, earning hundreds of dollars due to its more comedic content. It also features the first of Farley’s many songs about sports in “ALCS 2004 (Red Sox v Yankees)”, which also contributed to the album’s financial success. Farley wrote the track the day after Game 7 of the 2004 American League Championship Series (Thursday, October 21, 2004), which the Red Sox won to punch their ticket to the World Series. A local radio station played the song, marking the first radio play ever received by the band. The Red Sox would go on to win the World Series for the first time in 86 years, and Farley would go on to form a prolific roster of sports-related bands.
Songs from this album also appear as tracks on records by The Spoiled Chefs, Farley’s duo with his friend and former coworker Kevin McGee. Their debut album Songs About Food features “Chocolate Ice Cream”, “Pig Products”, “Filet Mignon”, “Who Put Coffee in my Mountain Dew?”, and “Franks ‘n’ Beans”. Their follow-up Songs About Holidays and Other Things features “Baby Pirate” and “ALCS 2004 (Red Sox v Yankees)”, although the latter song is titled “The A.L.C.S. Song” on the Chefs album.
An instrumental version of “Filet Mignon” is also used in the movie Sammy: The Tale of a Teddy and a Terrible Tunnel (2002).
