Junior Beef & The Chief is a Motern Media band consisting of Matt Farley and Tom Scalzo. It is their first new act as a duo since Moes Haven, which had disbanded in 2023 after over 25 years.
As Junior Beef & The Chief, Farley and Scalzo have only released one album, Welcome to the Coconut Lounge, in April 2025. However, the music and overall concept of the act have won over fans both old and new, mostly due to the shocking difference from the duo’s usual fare.
Origins and fictional backstory
Farley and Scalzo had come up with the idea of “Junior Beef & The Chief” long before recording under that name. They joked about the duo’s backstory for years, making the characters more and more despicable and shameless as time went on.
The name comes from “junior beef”, a well-loved type of roast beef sandwich famous in the North Shore of Massachusetts for its tender meat, grilled bun, and tangy James River barbecue sauce. (No other sauce will do, by the way.) The duo have never specified which member is “Junior Beef” and which is “The Chief”.
The characters are two deadbeat musicians from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, both of whom have no relation to Farley or Scalzo (either as the real or fictional versions of Moes Haven.) Junior Beef & The Chief play a style of music that blends 90s hip-hop, disco, and funk, with both having an affinity for the bass guitar as shown on the cover of Welcome to the Coconut Lounge. When not playing music, the duo enjoys Fort Lauderdale nightlife, including clubbing, hot tubbing, bowling, and exploring open romantic relationships (of which their spouses may or may not approve.)
The duo also enjoys high fashion, with both of them sporting jeans and shiny jackets whenever they go out. Scalzo wears a red glittering jacket on the cover of Welcome to the Coconut Lounge, and Farley wears a gold jacket. Farley has worn his jacket in many live performances since releasing the Junior Beef & The Chief album, even if he and Scalzo do not play any songs as the act.
Welcome to the Coconut Lounge (2025)
The duo’s first and only album as Junior Beef & The Chief, Welcome to the Coconut Lounge, came out on April 30, 2025. Farley and Scalzo recorded songs for the album starting in November 2024, although most of the recording took place in March and April 2025.
Farley apparently came up with the idea for the jackets in March 2025, before a show at the legendary Cantab Lounge in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The cover of the album shows Farley and Scalzo in the jackets holding bass guitars in front of the Cantab’s curtained walls and couches. (In reality, the basement of the Cantab — where the show took place — is a dive bar and intimate performance space, although that feeds into the mythos of the characters.)
The album spawned two live hits, “Let’s Hit the Hot Tub” and “How About That Internet?!”
Future
It is unlikely that Farley and Scalzo will create new music as Junior Beef & The Chief; however, because of the act’s popularity during live shows, they will surely continue to perform music from Welcome to the Coconut Lounge.
