Projection From The Side are a band consisting of Matt Farley, Doug “Froggy” Brennan, and Chris “Pete” Peterson, as well as Tom Scalzo.
The trio formed the band in high school in Massachusetts in the 1990s, and would continue to play together after graduation. The band used Brennan’s basement during breaks from college to record cassettes, much in the same vein as Farley’s other band Moes Haven. After college (around the early 2000s), Peterson moved to California, and Brennan moved to Florida. The band dissolved at this point, although all the members kept in touch.
In late 2014, Brennan returned to Massachusetts for a wedding, and he suggested to Farley that they bring Projection From The Side back together. Peterson had moved back to Massachusetts by then, and Farley had been living there for quite some time. The trio wrote several songs before meeting to record Basement Reunion, which they released in December 2014. This album contains new songs as well as rewrites of tracks they wrote in their earlier years.
The band would not record for a while following Basement Reunion, although Peterson and Farley would release an album as their duo The Finklestinks, and the band would perform live at events such as the Motern Extravaganza. In October 2017, Brennan returned to Massachusetts for another wedding, and the band reunited to record Let’s Go Camping!, a new batch of songs which they released later that month. The album features another high school friend Rosie on two tracks, which originally stemmed from her and Brennan’s school band Circus Azul.
Let’s Go Camping! also features Tom Scalzo on lead guitar, as he was crashing at the Farley residence while in town from upstate New York, and Farley asked for his input. Scalzo was initially hesitant to impose, but the trio welcomed him to join their ranks. This configuration of Projection From The Side — the original three members plus Scalzo — would go on to form a new band, The Big Heist, in 2018.
While the band continues to perform at live events, either as the original trio or with Scalzo, they have not put out any new music since Let’s Go Camping!, and future releases seem unlikely due to Farley’s announcement that he will not record any more No-Jokes songs.
